Almost as soon as Congressman John Yarmuth announced his retirement from Congress, state Senator Morgan McGarvey announced via tweet and press release that he is running for the seat.

McGarvey began serving in the KY Senate in 2012, and was elected the minority leader in 2018.

In a press release announcing his candidacy, McGarvey included this statement:

“Congressman Yarmuth has been an incredible advocate for Kentucky families,” said Morgan McGarvey. “I’m getting into this race understanding that our district has been fortunate to have such a dedicated and respected representative in Washington. His absence leaves a huge hole in our delegation and we need to ensure Kentucky continues to send an effective Democratic voice to Congress. I’m going to fight to end generational poverty, rebuild our infrastructure and economy, codify a woman’s right to choose into federal law, and reform our criminal justice system in part by legalizing marijuana.”

McGarvey will be facing former state Rep. Attica Scott in the Democratic primary. She announced her candidacy for the seat in July of this year.
