Bevin, Massie advocate against gun control
In separate interviews on Sunday and Monday, Governor Bevin and Congressman Thomas Massie said gun control laws would not make a difference in lowering the rates of school shootings. In addition, Massie advocated for arming teachers. (Forward Kentucky)

Judge tosses out Bevin administration’s lawsuit over the state’s OxyContin settlement
A Frankfort judge has dismissed efforts by the Bevin administration to recover $4.2 million in attorney’s fees in the state’s Purdue Pharma settlement. (Courier-Journal)

Special election for House 89 is today
This month’s second special election is on tap for Tuesday, Feb. 27. Robert Goforth and Kelly Smith are running to fill the District 89 seat left vacant by the resignation of long-serving Rep. Marie Rader, R-McKee. Republican Goforth is self-funding his run at this point, having dropped $100,000 into his campaign coffer. Smith is a Madison County librarian and artist, and a former AmeriCorps volunteer. She reported raising $11,310 for her run. (KY Gazette)

West Virginia governor fails to pay taxes needed by struggling Kentucky schools
Coal companies linked to the billionaire governor of West Virginia owe $2.9 million in delinquent property taxes in Kentucky, shorting schools and local government programs of money at a time many are struggling with tight finances. The biggest outstanding debt is in Knott County, where a company called Kentucky Fuel Corporation is $1.92 million behind on taxes on real estate, mining equipment and coal reserves, according to local records. House Republicans continue to work on budget, expect vote this week
Republican in the Kentucky House continue to tweak their budget bill (without input from Democrats), and expect to present it for a vote later this week. (Richmond Register)
