We have turned off comments on stories, and added forums. Let me explain why.

For a long time, we have had comments turned on, but have not received very many. We DO get lots of interaction on our Facebook page and our Twitter feed. On our stories? Not so much.

Perhaps it is a reflection of the times; people don’t want to be the first to comment on a story and wind up getting attacked. Or perhaps it is partially a function of being a news site as well as an advocacy and policy site; people just want to read the work.

Whatever the reason, it wasn’t working. So, we turned off the comment feature.

BUT – we added forums. Why did we do that?

The basic reason is that we are starting a virtual book club in a few weeks, and we needed forums to do that. After looking at a number of forum plugins for the site, we went with bbPress: simple, works well with WordPress, and free.

Once we had the book club forum set up, we thought we might as well add some other forums too, just to see what happens. So, there are two other forums out there right now:

  • The Kiddie Pool, for you to use to introduce yourselves and discuss non-political stuff
  • Post Discussions, for discussing posts on the site

We may add a few more in the future, including a Site Stuff forum for people to make suggestions.

Let us know what you think!
