I totally get it. Calling someone Hitler can be obscene. Let’s agree that Adolph Hitler was one of a kind, the murderer of 12 million people, half of them Jews.
That said, is Donald Trump a fascist? You be the judge.
- Trump says he wants to centralize power in the Executive Branch. While Trump tries to distance himself from the extremely unpopular Project 2025, this vision is at the heart of this manifesto.
- Trump says that he wants to punish any television network, newspaper, or any other outlet that is critical of him.
- He wants to file charges against President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, former FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi, any prosecutor or judge who goes against him; any lawyer, donor, or election worker who gets in his way in elections, and anyone with the temerity to criticize his supporters on the U.S. Supreme Court. (NPR helpfully compiled a list of the political enemies Trump wants to punish.)
- Trump — and especially his acolyte Stephen Miller — have made it clear that they will build interment camps — or what Trump buddy and convicted former Sheriff Joe Arpaio calls “concentration camps” — to house the 11 million undocumented immigrants.
- Lastly, Trump has waxed eloquent on his desire to sic the National Guard or the U.S. Army on protestors whose message he doesn’t like.
Any of that make you think of these figures from history:
- Argentinian fascist dictator Juan Perón?
- Ugandan fascist dictator Idi Amin Dada?
- Chilean fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet?
- Spanish fascist dictator Francisco Franco?
- Benito Mussolini?
- Xi Jinping?
- Kim Jong-Un?
- Vladimir Putin?
Hitler wasn’t the only fascist. We’ve seen their examples throughout history.
Let’s not elect Dear Leader as the next fascist dictator.
