On Trump building the New York skyline

Uhm ... really?

Donald Trump built the New York City skyline.

– Eric Trump, July 18, last night of the RNC

This is not the first time that Second Son Eric Trump has credited his father with building New York City’s internationally famous skyline. Each time the backlash has been great. But pity poor Eric Trump. He’s terrible at math, just like the vast majority of Republicans.

New York’s premier skyscraper, the Empire State Building, receives nearly 4.5 million visitors every year. That’s more than the number of votes Donald Trump received in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming — combined. Just sayin.’ Notably, it was built in 1930. 16 years before Trump was born.

But every single landmark in New York City predates Trump’s birth:

  • The Chrysler Building? 1928.
  • Rockefeller Center? 1939.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge? 1869.
  • The majestic St. Patrick’s Cathedral? 1858.
  • The Statue of Liberty? 1876.
  • Grand Central Station? 1913.
  • Radio City Music Hall? 1932.
  • The Top of the Rock, that Art Deco gem? 1933.

There’s an exception. One World Trade Center, built in the aftermath of the terrible 9/11 attacks, opened in 2014. It’s owned by the Port Authority and has no connection to Donald Trump.

Now, Eric is known as the dumb one. So maybe his math skills are such that he doesn’t realize that those landmarks couldn’t have been built by his father because he can’t comprehend, for example, 1930 < 1946. Or maybe he really is blown away by his dad, believing that Daddy could magically build landmarks long before you were even born.

Or maybe Eric’s at least one of the reasons that #LiarTrump was trending on Twitter.
