DES MOINES, Iowa — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he would be “eager” to debate Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance if he were selected as Kamala Harris’ running mate in the coming days.
“I'd be eager for the chance to debate him, just like I know the vice president is eager to debate former President Trump,” Beshear told the Des Moines Register Saturday in an exclusive interview.
Beshear was in Des Moines helping to rally Iowa Democrats at their annual Liberty & Justice Celebration. His appearance is drawing outsize attention as Beshear is among a list of potential running mates being vetted by Vice President Harris, who appears set to clinch her party's nomination ahead of the Democratic National Convention after President Joe Biden upended the political world and announced he would end his reelection effort.
He told the Register Saturday that if he is indeed Harris’ running mate, he’d relish the chance to go after Vance in a vice presidential debate.
“Our debate would admittedly be a little bit personal,” he said. “This is a guy that used to come a couple weeks a summer, at best, to Kentucky and then wrote a book (Hillbilly Elegy) claiming to know us, claiming to understand our culture. He called my people lazy, and these are the coal miners that built this country.”
