The worst-kept secret in Kentucky politics is about to be a secret no more.

According to Nick Storm at Kentucky Fried Politics, former U.N. ambassador Kelly Craft is set to announce her candidacy for governor after Labor Day, with state Senator Max Wise as her running mate.

Craft, wife of coal baron Joe Craft, is supposedly considering an announcement event at the court house in Glasgow, her home town, on Tuesday, September 13. Earlier reports said that she planned on writing her campaign a $500,000 check the day she announced.

Storm notes that Craft may hire the same campaign consultants that worked with Glenn Youngkin in Virginia, where public education was a focus of Youngkin’s campaign. Senator Wise has worked on education issues in the past, and was the author of the “Teaching American Principles Act” in this year’s General Assembly.
