FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT/AP) - The FBI and U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday were investigating suspicious packages that have been sent to or received by elections officials in several states, but there were no immediate reports that any of the packages contained hazardous material.
According to the Kentucky State Board of Elections, they received an envelope Tuesday morning. They say an administrative specialist noticed a white powder coming from a bundle of mail. We’re told their office had received a bulletin Monday from the FBI and USPS to be on the lookout for manilla envelopes.
The Kentucky State Board of Elections contacted the FBI and postal inspectors. We’re told testing was done, and they were able to determine the substance wasn’t hazardous, but they don’t know exactly what it is.
The packages were also sent Tuesday to elections officials in Massachusetts and Missouri, authorities said.
