KY AFL-CIO asks Ethics Commission to investigate Cameron campaign

The latest in the back-and-forth between the two gubernatorial campaigns

The Kentucky AFL-CIO has asked the state Executive Branch Ethics Commission to investigate “circumstances surrounding” donations to the gubernatorial campaign of Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

The request came after it was reported in the Daily Beast that the Cameron campaign had actively solicited donations from the executives at a company that the AG’s office was investigating. Edgewater Recovery Centers has been under investigation since 2022. Early this year, a representative of the Cameron campaign asked for donations from the Edgewater leaders. They later donated $7,600 to the Cameron campaign. The campaign later refunded the money, and Cameron recused himself from the Edgewater investigation.

State AFL-CIO president Bill Londrigan said it was “appropriate, timely and legally important” for the Ethics Commission to look into the matter. The union has close ties to the Democratic Party.

This latest action follows an earlier incident involving the Beshear campaign and possible straw donors contributing over $200,000. Those donations were revealed in an analysis by Tom Loftus of the Kentucky Lantern. The donations were all made on one credit card. The Beshear campaign returned the donations.

Following that story, Daniel Cameron requested the FBI to investigate that situation, since his office could not.
