Are you in Louisville? Here’s info on the upcoming special election.

Help choose the state senator to replace Morgan McGarvey.

Morgan McGarvey is our newly-elected member of the U.S. House, stepping into the very large shoes left by John Yarmuth when he retired from Congress.

Before being elected in Congress in 2022, McGarvey was a member of the Kentucky Senate. Thus, his Senate seat is now vacant, and a special election will be held on February 21 to fill that seat.

He represented Senate District 19, which covers much of Jefferson County. So, if you live in that district and are a registered voter, you are eligible to vote in this election. It’s a general election, so party registration doesn’t matter.

Who’s running?

Two women are running to take McGarvey’s place in the state Senate: Republican candidate Misty Glin and Democratic candidate Cassie Chambers Armstrong, who is currently a member of Louisville Metro Council.

Am I eligible to vote in this election, and where do I vote?

To see if you live in District 19, take a look at this map of the district.

A better idea is to go to https://jeffersoncountyclerk.org/wheredoivote/ and enter JUST your street address (not city or zip). When you do and click Search, you’ll get a response that shows where you vote. You will also get a response that shows when your next election is. If you are in District 19, it will say your next election is the special election.

If you are NOT registered, you have until January 23, 2023 by 4:00 p.m. to register. Go to GoVoteKY.com to do that, or to check your registration to make sure all info there is correct.

What if I want to vote absentee, or on another day?

You can request an absentee ballot from now to February 7th. Go to GoVoteKY.com to request a mail-in ballot if you meet residency and eligibility qualification requirements. A ballot drop box will be available at the Jefferson County Clerk Election Center (1000 E. Liberty Street 40204) from Jan. 9 to Feb. 21, during office hours.
