Former Northern Kentucky attorney Eric Deters said he’s “99%” sure he’ll run against Rep. Thomas Massie in the Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District in 2024.

Deters, fresh off running for the Republican nomination for Kentucky governor, sent out a Tweet and an email saying, “I will announce my decision to run against Thomas Massie at Patriot Freedom Fest September 9.”

In the three-minute video release about the potential announcement, Deters said he’d make the announcement at Patriot Freedom Fest — Deters’ annual political picnic, where he invites top Republican names from around the country, such as Eric Trump and Donald Trump, Jr.

Deters said he might choose to run because of two of Rep. Massie’s recent votes.

The first occurred this week when Rep. Massie voted with 19 other Republicans not to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) “for conduct that misleads the American people in a way that is not befitting an elected Member of the House of Representatives.”

“Thomas Massie voted with 19 other Republicans to not censure Adam Schiff,” Deters said. “It’s outrageous. And he’s always got some kind of cute little goofy excuse, and that he always claims has to do with the Constitution.”

The second occurred in early June when Rep. Massie voted to pass the debt ceiling limit bill.

The 99-page bill suspends the $31.4 Trillion debt limit until January 2025. Massie voted in favor of the bill, and his vote just days earlier in the House Rules Committee proved crucial to the Fiscal Responsibility Act moving to a House floor vote.

Massie, who developed a pin he wears in Congress showing the amount of the U.S. National Debt, is often a sharp critic of the country’s increasing debt.

“Where was that constitution and your principles, Thomas Massie, when you voted for this colossal debt increase of $4 trillion that’s going to come our way when you lifted the debt ceiling,” Deters said. “See what a hypocrite he is. He carries around a lapel with the debt. And then he goes and does that.”

Massie, who was recently appointed to the powerful House Rules Committee, said he’s focusing on his job in Washington.

“My constituents want me to stop Joe Biden’s assault on the American dream,” Massie said. “That’s what I’m focused on.”
