God vs Trump

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

– II Chronicles 7:14

In hindsight, it seems so obvious: How could so many Christians have missed God’s message?

First, there were the children being torn from the families and put into literal cages. Trump supporters bristled at these sites being called concentration camps — although that was a term pioneered by disgraced former sheriff and current Trump pal Joe Arpaio. But then Americans began to find out about Nazi-like sterilization programs there.

Then came the hurricanes, the flooding, literal plague in the form of COVID-19, the plague of murder hornets, fire on the West Coast. Tell me that I’m not the only one who has been thinking of 2020 as the second coming of the plagues of Egypt.

Then there are millions who’ve lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and corporate greed. Can famine be far away? And, although Donald Trump says a lot about endless wars, there are more wars and rumors of wars than ever. Remember the tweet in which Trump threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea, leading to terrifying rumors of wars? And I forget how many other rumors of wars Trump has sparked with his so-far-empty threats of annihilation.

And, as with Pharaoh, the message is clear: God is upset with America and wants us to vote Donald Trump out.

What other conclusion can we come to? Although extremist Christian nationalists promulgated the conspiracy theory that President Obama was the Antichrist, he didn’t ineptly preside over 200,000 (soon to be 300,000) plague deaths, and he didn’t preside over conflagrations up and down the entire West Coast. We sure have that fire and fury that Trump predicted he’d cause! And never, in the entire history of the United States, have so many people lost their jobs in a single month. Clearly, Trump — if he ever had it — has lost God’s favor.

Forty-three percent of evangelical Christians believe that COVID-19 is a message from God. I hope they get the right message and repent from having supported a reprobate.

By their fruit, ye shall know them.

– Matthew 7:16

And right now, all that Trump is yielding is rotten fruit.
