Here’s a simple truth: You can’t run an election without poll workers.
And in Kentucky, we need about 15,000 of them this fall.
So, if you want to do a good deed (and get paid for doing it), and want to serve the cause of democracy in a very local, grassroots way, signing up to be a poll worker is one of the best ways to do all of that.
And best of all, you can now do it from the comfort of your web browser, courtesy of Secretary of State Michael Adams.
“We can’t open the polls without volunteer poll workers,” said Adams. “Whether you are a Kentuckian who wants to ensure election integrity, or to prevent voter suppression, being a poll worker is the solution.”
Simple go to this web site, choose the county you live in, and fill in the rest of the form. Your info will then be sent to your county clerk, who will contact you with the details of serving as a poll worker in your county.
And Independents, guess what: You are now eligible to be poll workers as well, thanks to a 2021 change to the law pushed through by Adams.
I’ve been a poll workers for multiple elections, and the process involves two steps:
- Attend a training session of about three hours, for which you will be paid.
- On election day, be at your polling location in time to open the doors at 6:00 AM, and stay there to close it all down at 6:00 PM.
So, if you can do those two things, you should sign up now, using the link above. It’s important, and you are needed. Become a poll worker today!
